Mishloach manot - Part 2

Standards for Mishloach Manot

The Ritva in Masechet Megillah teaches that mishloach manot should take into account the standards and needs of the giver and the recipient.

In terms of value, a person must give something that is aligned with his own standards and means as well as mindful of the standards of the recipient.

One should also take into account the needs and limitations of the recipient (e.g., don’t give cake to a gluten-free recipient). If one realizes afterwards that he has gifted a food that the recipient cannot eat, he has still fulfilled the obligation of mishloach manot, although not in the l’chatchila (most preferable) way.
