If one uses a bottle of water to wash his hands, may he drink from the same bottle afterwards?
For example, if you’re in the car and used the only available water bottle to wash your dirty hands, can you afterwards drink from it?
Gemara Horayot 13b teaches that if one drinks from water that was used for washing purposes, it can make one forget his learning. Some poskim understand this to mean that the actual (soiled) water that was used for washing should not then be used for drinking. Others are of the opinion that even the remaining water in the bottle should not be used for drinking.
The Chazon Ish offers a solution: If one takes a bottle of water that was used for washing, and then pours some additional water away, he creates a division between using the water for washing purposes and using it for drinking purposes, thereby making it permissible to drink from it.
