May one eat caviar (fish eggs) without a kosher certification?

Four hundred years ago, in the times of the Shulchan Aruch, red caviar was permitted to be eaten even without kosher certification. This is because red caviar can only come from a kosher fish, whereas black caviar comes from a non-kosher fish. Today, this no longer applies, as fish eggs can be dyed to appear red when they are really black and vice versa. Therefore, one should only buy caviar with a kosher symbol.
