May one buy fish without a kosher certification?

The Torah rules that any fish with scales is a kosher fish. Therefore, if the skin is still on the fish and scales are visible, it is permissible even without a kosher symbol.

However, what if all of the skin has been removed?

In that case, we cannot rely solely on the labeling of the fish. If there is no visible skin and scales, then there must be a kosher symbol.

There is one exception: salmon. Due to its unique color, one can buy salmon without a kosher symbol even if the skin has been removed and scales are not visible.
